The moment you become a college student is the moment you become a writer. Today, writing assignments show up in nearly all classes, and the need for solid writing skills has never been greater. Here are three tips to help you write better for academic success.

Number 1, Visualize Your Paper

Okay, I know it can sound a little weird, but it really works. Simply try to imagine how your paper will look once completed. Will there be a multi-paragraph introduction section or just a simple thesis statement? Will the body of the paper have three, four, five paragraphs? How much space will each paragraph take up on the page?

As your mind attempts to visualize these building blocks for your paper, you can pick up on ideas about how to structure your writing. And you can aim at the general format of your visualization to give you clear benchmarks as you go.

Number 2, Draft then Edit

This is classic writing advice, but it’s worth repeating. You should write freely without focusing on the details of grammar, word order, or small-scale coherency. Instead, you should use the first draft of your paper to simply transfer your thoughts on the subject from your mind to the paper. Once that is complete, the editing process begins.

Leave yourself plenty of time to edit as this can be the part of the process that makes your paper shine the most. Many people can produce a passing first draft, but not many people will take the time to improve their paper through careful, thoughtful editing.

Number 3, Have Fun

Seriously, you are going to spend a lot of time writing over your college career. If you can find a way to enjoy it, that’s a huge win! You can,

  • Gamify your writing process
  • Form or join a writing group
  • Search out unique topics for every assignment that you find interesting
  • Start a blog to get extra writing practice and teach your mind that writing doesn’t always have to be schoolwork

That’s all!
