I noticed awhile ago that when I’m on vacation, I feel much more motivated to get things done. I may set aside time to rest and relax, but I usually get involved in some kind of project during a trip because I just feel extremely inspired and motivated to be “my best self”.
I think this happens because when I’m on vacation, the whole point of existence becomes to do things I genuinely want to do. Whether it’s a tour of a museum or scheduled downtime by the pool, every moment is dedicated to doing exactly what I want to do with my time. I genuinely want to write blog posts, refine my coaching model, and learn more. And so, naturally, I find ways to work on those kinds of projects even on my vacations.
What if you could create that kind of environment at school? What if your day-to-day college schedule was so aligned with your values and goals that your life felt like an extended vacation?
Meaningful Schedules
A schedule often feels restrictive, there to remind you what you’re supposed to do and when you’re supposed to do it. You can reframe schedules to something completely different. Schedules are there to give us clarity. Already at max capacity for time commitments this semester? Hard to know until you can see how your time is being spent. Scheduling proactively gives you an element of control, allowing you to design your vacation-style life.
Winning with Discipline
Set up a habit tracking program to get really disciplined in a few key areas of life (hydration, sleep, movement, and nutrition are excellent starting places for most people). As you begin to reap the rewards of discipline in these areas, expand your practice of discipline to studies. Make “doing what you want to do” a discipline thing instead of an indulgence thing.
Figure Out Your Why
All of this may still leave you a little empty if your life and your “why” aren’t aligned. You must constantly reevaluate your path in life and consider whether your current goals truly align with your values. If you live in alignment with your “why”, life can feel much more purposeful, and your vacation mindset has a stronger chance of taking hold.
